Madison Rambles #9: The Nations End Slavery

Hello, everyone!

It is rare that a history book initially restores your faith in humanity, and then it shatters it into pieces seconds later. Actually, that may be more common than I think, but I'm talking about slavery and feminism.

Slavery is banned, but former slaves still had to work long hours for little pay. Women could now go out and get jobs, but the glass ceiling was so high, it was often a low-paying desk job or an assistant to someone. Unlike what the book implies, this still happens today with the pay gap.

This is Chapter 16, starting with Echos of Revolution. For more reading, check out the Chapter 16 Documents, but for this post, I'll be ignoring that.

Did you know that slavery is illegal worldwide? Even unpaid overtime will cause a lot of controversy. This is because slavery became a non-essential practice, further proven by the British Empire banning it and still being successful. While slavery is still around today, it is heavily frowned upon and illegal everywhere, especially in the United States in America.

Nationalism started becoming a thing, for better and for worse. On one hand, people started to be united by one culture and language. On the other hand... Germany. They were very exclusive and hated minorities, but that is a story for another day.

Feminism also became a thing! And no, it wasn't Twitter and Tumblr's, "I want to be equal, but be better than men" kind of feminism. It was women getting jobs, going to universities, and being independent from men. There was a lot of backlash, mainly from men who wanted women to always have babies, but as a woman, I'm glad we have more rights. Especially since I've read about the horrors of childbirth. Seriously, I could not be a housewife.

Finally, the Decembrists had a revolt. They may have failed so hard, it made all other unsuccessful revolutions seem successful, but they shall be remembered. Also, they led to a successful revolt in 1917, so maybe they have succeeded after all.

Well, that was a lot of revolutions. But we aren't done yet! Next time, we will be talking about another kind of revolution: the Industrial Revolution! And it was successful... maybe a little too successful.

Until next time!
